tv News 3 Live at Three NBC October 19, 2016 3:00pm-3:30pm PDT
here in the valley. what police say the suspect did moments before the shooting. it is the final debate between hillary clinton and donald trump. the last presidential debate before the election and it's happening right here i >> the two candidates square off in just under three hours and we have our team coverage at unlv. we're going to start with jim snyder outside of the thomas & mack. jim set the scene for us. what does it look like out there? >> reporter: well, let me tell you, friend. the first fight, boxing fight i ever went to in las vegas, took place in that building behind me. george foreman was on the card. nothing what it feels like
first walking up toward the thomas & mack, we were showing last night, how the whole parking lot is ringed in those shipping containers. i've never seen that before and the security presence. you notice right away, both with local metro officers and with plenty of federal and police state here as well. a lot of guns and just a big perimeter around. the i.d.s and credentials are checked over i'm standing in front of the thomas & mack. this is set up for the media to do their live reports and live shows. you see the fox news team over there and the media here, somewhere between 2500 and 3,000 people from all over the country and all over the world. 28 different countries are here covering this debate tonight. so it's absolutely stunning to see that many people all focused here on las vegas and what is
i know i've heard from a lot of viewers this week who are hoping this third debate will stick to the issues. you want to hear about healthcare and education and social security and all of the rest. but, of course, there's a lot of speculation it will turn into insames and -- insults and accusations in the media. i want to take you inside what we call the filing center and also the spin r w our jeff gillan is in there right now. >> reporter: hey, jim. how are you? welcome to the spin room where we're already getting spun by representatives of each of the respective campaigns. you are looking at our office behind me for the next eight hours. here's the deal -- the stage is now set and really all that's missing are the two people we're all waiting to see. hillary clinton and donald trump. the campaigns have their
cavern of media. as jim said, there are about 3,000 journalists hear to witness the final cage match of the campaign. i caught up with one of america's top political journalists, dan balls of the washington post to see what he expects to see this evening. do you think he will come out swinging? >> i assume he will want to do two things. one, he will make a case agast for a change argument. that's his strongest argument but i think one of the things we'll see is whether she provokes him or he provokes himself, she's gonna have to answer some questions. i assume that chris wallace will have very tough questions for her based on the new information that's come out over the past few weeks. >> reporter: and that would be some of the e-mails released by wikileaks regarding how the
also, her speech to goldman sachs got publicized. there may be a question about that coming up. we'll wait and see. coming up at 5:00, i talked with the head of the clinton campaign and one of donald trump's top advisers to get their take on what we'll see tonight. this will be a fascinating evening in american politics. jeff gillan, news 3. back to you. >> reporter: i can't wait. i know you can't either. it's fantastic to have a now we want to talk about the traffic issues. if you are not coming down to the debate, you need to know things are slow going around this part of time. jeff and i have been here for a couple of hours. so we didn't want into a lot on our way in. let's get back to the studio. jeff is tracking the traffic. what are you seeing? >> if if you are heading in and out of the thomas & mack expect days. between 4:00 and 10:00 p.m., you
you can see both directions of traffic are looking okay. a little slow northbound. southbound nothing yet. but the closures. >> into effect at 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and up will see the 15 southbound and then the 215 inant out of the airport connector. the airport connector is slow. 42 miles per hour currently. and looking at the thomas & mack, already seeing indications of what's to come with people funneling their way to that well as maryland parkway. for alternate routes if you are trying to get yourself to the airport, the best way is to avoid 15 southbound and the 215 ache take that back route and make your way back. but even that will be a little bit slow moving. a lot of people converging on the thomas & mack for this big and final debate. as we continue our coverage,
>> reporter: all right, jeff. thank you. and the predebate spin has been going on for days here in las vegas. it's -- as the candidates prep for their meeting here at the thomas & mack, their surrogates are doing the speaking for them. and harry reid took a swipe at donald trump before tonight's debate. he was speaking to a crowd down at a restaurant in henderson. reid said trump is fightening people with all of this talk about a rigged reid says united states is a nation of laws and the process will be fair no matter who wins. >> i think the only thing rigged i'm seeing is his mind. we should all be proud of what we have in this election system, and to have this man, who is -- who is doing everything he can to make america look bad, i don't get it. >> reporter: so senator reid is,
he's looking forward to spending more time with his family and that race to replace him is one of the most-watched in the country. in addition to all of the spinning going on, the surrogates and everyone around here, there are protests outside of the thomas & mack. want to talk with faith jessie who has been talking with some of those folks. >> reporter: yeah, it's a lot of energy out here from protesters on both sides. right behind me is the public expression area. law enfme protest during the debate. earlier, some of these people tried to -- well, they didn't try. they expressed themselves at trump tower off las vegas boulevard and they built a wall made out of taco trucks. >> what do we want! >> justice! >> reporter: a cry to bring unionized work to trump tower. >> we're not being treated fairly, in the sense that we don't have any health coverage
trump hotel joined hundreds of others to park the trucks. since the candidate who they claim has not honored their cry for action. >> we need to sit down and negotiate a contract to get fair wages to work he's employed. >> reporter: this served as a platform for crit advocates. >> some things they are protesting are actually things that hillary clinton did not support and she won't help these people because she's paid for by wall street. >> reporter: this trump supporter is latino. >> it's difficult, don't get me wrong and i'm also gay. >> reporter: he said trump is getting a bad rap from trump supporters. >> they say trump is a racist, et cetera. okay. that's all you got.
open to protesters all throughout the debate. it's actually open right now. it opened around noon and speakers are open until 8:00 p.m. tonight. reporting from the public expression area, faith jessie, news 3. >> thank you for that, faith. as you can see, it's been a huge day for las vegas. >> and the world really. we'll see these two candidates faceoff. it's the last chance you will see them on the same news3lv.com. >> you can stay with us on twitter, facebook. developing now, eight people including three firefighters hurt in a gas explosion. it happened this morning at a bagel shop in portland, oregon. a lot of destruction to show you here. several buildings ripped apart. firefighters were called to the area after the smell of gas and the explosion happened. coming up in less than 15 minutes, we'll have a live
chase end with a nevada highway patrol trooper opening fire on a man outside of a cadillac car dealership in henderson. >> the second carjacking victim is a 90-year-old man who was thrown to the man. kelsey thomas is live with a play by play of what happened. >> reporter: well, the good news this afternoon, the roads are back open to drivers out here. this is an investigation that involves two crime scenes. 30 minutes of terror and a su desperate to get away. a cadillac dealership in henderson turns into a crime scene. it all starts miles away at this am/pm on fremont and eastern. nhp says at 7:15 this morning, a woman is getting her car washed when a 28-year-old man steals her toyota. >> this surveillance video shows the suspect stalking her to her vehicle.
reverse with the door open. >> reporter: 12 minutes later a trooper spots the stolen car on the 95. the man behind the wheel driving fast and dangerous. >> striking other vehicles, he was running over curbs. he was in a desperate attempt to get away. >> reporter: the trooper gives chase. the suspect eventually stopping ten miles away at finley cadillac in henderson. >> at this point, his car is on rims. he's ran over curbs. he's struck other vehicles. his car is pretty much done at so he bails in the parking lot, runs into the vehicle dropoff or pickup for finley. runs up to this cadillac that's got a 90-year-old couple in there and like i said violently pulls this man from his vehicle, throws him to the ground, tries to get in. >> reporter: the nhp trooper and a witness try to stop the suspect. >> struggle ensues. he's able to get away where he jumps back into the cadillac and that's when shots were fired. >> reporter: by 7:45, the
